Showers, Basements & Cellars

We remove all compromised waterproofing and ascertain why it failed and what appropriate remedial action is required for the type and nature of the specific ingress. We do all the needed repairs to prevent the re-occurrence such as removing contaminated plaster and tanking out basements and showers before re-plastering with salt retarding render.

Leaking Showers

Closely related to leaking decks are leaking showers. It is seldom that a damp wall on the outside of the shower is caused by leaking plumbing. A leak detect Company can determine with a gas pressure test whether there is a leak on any pressure bearing pipes. However, if the leak is on the non-pressure pipes such as traps and outlets, it cannot be picked up by a pressure test.

Mostly, the lateral damp on the outer walls of the shower is caused by either:

  • A leaking trap,

  • A lack of initial waterproofing,

  • The breakdown of the incorrect initial waterproofing.

Generally, we need to remove the existing tiles, waterproofing, and floor base of the shower and replace the trap. Once we replace the trap, we caste a new waterproof base, then waterproof the floor before finally re-tiling.

Should the shower frame or the wall tiles also be a problem, this is quoted for separately in each specific case.

Specialized Treatment for Basements and Cellars

Where there is lateral water pressure on the outer walls of cellars and basements that are below ground level, this can cause penetration into these rooms.

As these underground rooms are often built into the mountain or heavily landscaped above the ground with pools and paving, these walls cannot always be treated from the outside positive side. All treatment has to be done from the negative inside. Specialized imported products are needed to treat these damp walls from the inside.

These rooms that are below the outer ground level have to be tanked.

Once all ingress had been stopped, we then plaster the walls with a salt retarding render.
